tucson: I live in tucson AZ and theres alot of hard packed dirt, and some caliche (a rock) but I want to dig many holes in my lot, how can I do this with out hours of work and only taking out a couple inches|||Frustrating isn鈥檛 it 鈥︹€ou never know how thick it is where it is nor how deep. I usually used a jack hammer 鈥? There was one place north of River road it was so bad we used dynamite. If you are planting trees make sure your hole is 4X as big as the ball, and if you can鈥檛 remove the caliche you need to at least punch some holes through for drainage.|||There is a drilling bit machine that you can rent at the heavy equipment renter. It usually requires two men to operate, on each side holding separate handles. It's gas operated and looks like a lawn mower w/ a big corkscrew at the bottom. Also available are trenching machines that can dig small trenches a long way.|||They also rent one man augers, and augers that attach to a small tractor. If your soil is like mine, that is the only option to wetting the soil and digging it out a little at a time.
